Meet Tío Carlos

Hi,

My name is Carlos Teran and I am a teacher here at M a t i l i j a Escuela Bosque.

I grew up in the city of Montebello and went to a bilingual school. Spanish was my first language and I eventually learned English in elementary school.

I have stayed in the San Gabriel Valley ever since- from Montebello to San Gabriel to Rosemead and now in Azusa! I am an only child and have an everlasting gratitude to both of my parents. They immigrated here as young adults and hoped for me to have a future here. My mom is from Michoacán and my dad is from Aguascalientes.

Growing up, I wanted to further my education and had the everlasting dream to work in education. I had the privilege of going to Cal State LA where I received my BA in Chicanx/Latinx Studies. It was through my Chicanx literature professor- I met Claudia and from there the seed was planted.

I have been here for about 4 years now and the memories are forever in my heart. Everyday is an opportunity for me to create change in the world and I’m thankful to be working with youth. Being with kids helps me stay a kid at heart. Whether if it’s dancing, singing, playing, or creating- I am thankful for everything kids teach me.

Aside from M a t i l i j a, I love exploring/traveling, going to concerts or doing anything with friends. My favorite colors are yellow, orange and pink and I am a major fan of spicy food!
